Speak Directly to the Reader
Government websites often ask people to take action—like applying for a service or learning more about a program.
When you write, talk directly to the user. Use you whenever possible.
Examples:
- You can email us at [email address].
- Learn more about starting your project.
If you're writing for more than one group—like patients and caregivers—talk to the main user as you, and refer to others by their role (like "your caregiver" or "the doctor").
Avoid the Word Citizens
Use words like people, the public, or users instead of citizens. This is more inclusive and respectful of everyone who may use our services.
For more on inclusive language, see the Conscious Style section.
