January 5, 2012 - Tohono O’odham Nation Wildland Fire (TONWF), Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), National Science Foundation (NSF) and Tucson Northwest Fire District (NFD) coordinate to reduce Hazardous Fuels at the Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO)

During November 2011, Tucson's Northest District Ironwood Hot Shot crew completed a priority hazardous fuels reduction project at the Kitt Peak National Observatory  (KPNO).   Located on the Tohono O'odham Nation Schuk Toak District this National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) facility supports the most diverse collection of astronomical observatories on Earth for nighttime optical and infrared astronomy, and daytime study of the Sun.  It is used by astronomers from around the planet booking telescope time for research.

The 2011 project is part of a series of fuels reduction projects managed by TONWF and funded by the NSF and BIA .  The 2011 phase was completed by the Ironwood Hot Shots.  Fuels reduction on Kitt Peak is critical to the operation of the facility.  In 2009 a fire in the extremely flammable oak and chaparral of the mountain top burned within one mile of the facility, shutting it down.
