Re-Petition Requests

On January 15, 2025, The United States Department of the Interior (Department) published notice in the Federal Register that it had revised the regulations governing the process through which the Secretary acknowledges an Indian Tribe, creating a conditional, time-limited opportunity for denied petitioners to re-petition for Federal acknowledgment (90 FR 3627).

The rule was set to take effect February 14, 2025; however, the department delayed that date. The new effective date is March 21, 2025 (90 FR 9515).

The updated regulation is found in Part 83 of Chapter 25 of the Code of Federal Regulations (25 CFR Part 83). Please consult the regulation for further detail.
