To be eligible to apply for open internships, you must be 18 years of age or older, registered for Selective Service (if applicable), and meet the following requirements:

Academic Requirements

BIA Pathways internship applicants must meet the following academic eligibility requirements:

  • Acceptance or enrollment in an accredited college, university, or technical school (Tribal College and University students are highly encouraged to apply!),
  • Part-time or full-time student status as defined by your educational institution,
  • A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher, and
  • Seeking a degree, certificate, or approved technical certification.

While applying to internship job announcements on USAJobs.gov, you will need to submit a copy of your unofficial transcript or other accepted forms of academic records to verify the requirements listed above. Applicants who fail to submit all required documents will not be considered.

Program and Federal Employment Requirements

In addition to the academic requirements listed above, BIA Pathways Internship applicants must comply with the terms and conditions of the Pathways Internship Program and adhere to all requirements of federal employment. These requirements will be included in the “Requirements” section of each internship job announcement on USAJobs.gov.

Applying with Indian Preference

If you are an enrolled member of a federally-recognized Tribe or are Alaska Native, you must claim Indian Preference status by submitting BIA Form 4432, “Verification of Indian Preference for Employment” along with your application.

Please Note: BIA Form 4432 is the only acceptable document to verify Indian Preference for federal employment. Other documents such as a Certificate of Degree of Indian or Alaska Native Blood or a Tribal Enrollment Card will not be accepted.

Our how to apply guide includes more information about how to claim Indian Preference on your application using BIA Form 4432.

Position-Specific Requirements

Some internships also have position-specific requirements, including:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
  • Completing a medical exam or drug testing.
  • An active driver’s license.

While applying for open internship announcements on USAJobs.gov, be sure to review the “Requirements” for position-specific requirements and provide all required documents with your application. Applicants who fail to submit all required documents will not be considered.
