The Great Lakes Agency was established in 1894 at La Pointe on Madeline Island in the Chequamegon Bay of Lake Superior -- the largest freshwater lake in the world.  In 1943 the Agency was moved to Ashland, Wisconsin, on the southern shore of the Chequamegon Bay. Until the mid-1970s the Agency provided direct services to all the tribes located in the states of Wisconsin and Michigan.  Today, the Agency continues to serve as the office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) from which the responsibilities to the federally recognized tribes of Wisconsin are carried out.  The Agency has primary responsibility for the government-to-government relationship for ten of the eleven federally recognized tribes in the State of Wisconsin that include six Bands of Lake Superior Chippewa, Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk, Oneida and Stockbridge-Munsee.
