District IV

Topic

The Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, District IV encompasses all Indian Country located within New Mexico, Colorado, portions of Northern Arizona and Utah, and the Ysleta Del Sur pueblo located in west Texas. Headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the District serves 26 federally recognized Tribes including Navajo Nation, two Apache tribes, 20 Pueblos, and two Ute Tribes. Total Tribal enrollment is 364,881 with a large portion of the memberships living in urban cities like Albuquerque, Santa Fe, El Paso, Phoenix and Durango.

Field Operations Directorate

Topic

Field Operations Directorate is responsible for administrating, developing, and implementing organizational objectives for the Divisions of Law Enforcement and Corrections. These programs integrate key national goals, priorities, and values. Field Operations programs also provide a great deal of technical assistance to BIA direct service programs and Indian tribes relating to public safety; and stress accountability and a commitment to continuous improvements to meet the organizations’ mission.

District IX

Topic

District IX is located at the Department of Interior in Sacramento, California, and was established in 2012. Prior to 2012, issues facing tribal law enforcement in California, was handled through the BIA-OJS District III Office in Phoenix, AZ. However, with the positive progression of the California Tribes and their desire to implement their own police departments, and pursue Deputation Agreements which would allow tribal officers to be issued Special Law Enforcement Commissions (SLEC), it was decided there was a need for a new district.

    • "Charged with ensuring “that the laws be faithfully executed,” the 93 United States Attorneys work to enforce federal laws throughout the country. The President appoints a United States Attorney to each of the 94 federal districts (Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands are separate districts but share a United States Attorney).

BIA VICTIM ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (VAP)

The BIA Office of Justice Services established the victim services program specifically for victims located in Indian country. It was created in part due to unique challenges encountered when crimes occur in Indian country and to help fill the gap between the Federal and tribal court systems.
