BIA Pathways Host Information

Prospective Hosts

The Bureau of Indian Affairs Pathways Program provides paid internship opportunities for students interested in serving Tribal Nations and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Hosting Pathways Student Trainees offers host offices the opportunity to develop their workforce, support succession planning and strengthen hiring pipelines, while training the next generation of workers and leaders.

Request to Host a BIA Pathways Intern

BIA offices or Tribal Nations interested in hosting a Pathways Student Trainee, please complete the Host Request Form.

Information Requested:

  • Internship location, work schedule, anticipated duties
  • Identification of host supervisor and a secondary contact
  • Office capacity to support conversion opportunities

Host Responsibilities and Expectation:

  • Provides daily oversight to intern
  • Participates in programmatic check-ins with Pathways staff
  • Serves as primary contact for Pathways staff

Please note: Student Trainees' work schedules must not conflict with their academic progress or course schedule. We may ask for increased flexibility to accommodate student schedules, particularly during the school year.

Internship Duration & Conversion Requirements

BIA Pathways internships duration vary due to host office needs, student availability, and academic timelines. Internships may occur in a single summer or continue across multiple semesters and years.

Conversion Requirements:

  • Complete their academic program
  • Maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA
  • Accrue 480 internship hours (160 hours can be waived with host support)

Following graduation, Student Trainees have 180 days to be converted into a full-time career-ladder position.
