Rocky Mountain Region

Overview

The Regional Director serves as the representative for the Director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs with the responsibility to strengthen the government to government relationships with all the Federally-recognized tribes under the jurisdiction of the RMRO. The Rocky Mountain Region has two Deputy Regional Directors and a Safety Officer, who work directly for the Regional Director.

The Deputy Regional Director for Indian Services is the designated official for maintaining and discharging the trust responsibility of the Secretary of the Interior in program areas that include: self-determination, tribal government; human services; administrative support services; housing improvement; and engineering programs that include irrigation, facilities, safety of dams, and transportation.

The Deputy Regional Director for Trust Services serves as the designated official for maintaining and discharging the trust responsibility of the Secretary of the Interior through public laws, regulations and best business practices concerning individually owned native allotments. They are responsible for fiscal stewardship of Trust Lands and Trust Resources.

Both Deputy Regional Directors work in partnership with the Bureau of Trust Funds Administration to administer individual Indian money accounts and trust asset management activities within the region. They both work closely with tribal governments, American Indian leaders and individuals and organizations.

The Rocky Mountain Region provides services to 9 tribes in Montana and Wyoming encompassing a trust surface land base of more than 8,747,840 acres. There are approximately 74,677 enrolled tribal members within the Region. The Regional Office is located in southeastern Montana in the city of Billings.
