MESCALERO, New Mexico - The Bureau of Indian Affairs has released video and audio footage from a May 23, 2025, officer-involved shooting in Mescalero, New Mexico. The below community briefing video is intended to help members of the community gain a better understanding of what occurred.
This incident is still under investigation, and all statements in this briefing are based on the details we know at this point. We are committed to being transparent with our community, and it’s our priority to release this information and inform our community in a timely fashion. For privacy purposes, we have concealed certain audio and images of the individuals captured in this video.

In October 2022, the Department of the Interior announced a series of new law enforcement policies to advance transparent and accountable policing practices. On July 13, 2023, the Department of the Interior instituted a new Department Policy for the Expedited Public Release of Body Worn Camera and Vehicle Mounted Camera Video Footage. On January 10, 2025, BIA OJS implemented a new Expedited Release Policy for law enforcement recordings following incidents of public interest.
