BULLHEAD, South Dakota - The Bureau of Indian Affairs has released vehicle-mounted camera footage from a June 20, 2023, officer-involved shooting in Bullhead, South Dakota. The community briefing video is intended to help members of the community gain a better understanding of what occurred.  

This incident is still under investigation, and all statements in this briefing are based on the details we know at this point. We are committed to being transparent with our community. For privacy purposes, we have concealed certain audio and images of the individuals captured in this video. Aside from privacy redactions, the video footage from the incident has not been edited.  

A word of caution: this video of an officer-involved shooting contains graphic content. Viewer discretion is advised.  

In October 2022, the Department of the Interior announced a series of new law enforcement policies to advance transparent and accountable policing practices as part of the continuing implementation of President Biden’s May 2022 Executive Order on Advancing Effective, Accountable Policing and Strengthen Public Safety

In the coming months, the BIA will consult with Tribes on the development of a bureau policy, consistent with the department’s policy and the president’s executive order. The BIA is committed to transparent policing and strengthening the public‘s trust in its law enforcement program.
