Regional Director, Midwest Region

Tammie Poitra - serves as the regional director for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Midwest Regional Office. She oversees operations and management across Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan from the Midwest Region headquarters in Bloomington, Minnesota.

In her role, Poitra manages more than 7.5 million acres of land held in trust and ceded territories for 35 Tribes. Her dedicated focus lies in nurturing relationships and fostering self-determination among Tribal communities. With nearly four decades of experience, including over 28 years in management roles, Poitra consistently delivers innovative solutions to organizational challenges and champions meaningful consultation with Tribes.

Under Poitra's leadership, the "Partners in Action" annual conference has flourished, facilitating collaboration among Federal, State, and Tribal partners. In FY-2023, the conference attracted 549 attendees from all 12 Regions of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Additionally, Poitra spearheaded a Federal Partners training initiative for the Bureau of Land Management, providing essential guidance to new Program Managers and Superintendents.

An enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in North Dakota, Poitra holds a distinguished position as a Career Senior Executive within the Department of the Interior.
