Janel Broderick

Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary

Janel Broderick serves as the principal deputy assistant secretary for Indian Affairs, exercising the delegated authority of the assistant secretary for Indian Affairs.

Born and raised in Alaska, Janel is passionate about people, heritage, and culture. She worked for the late-Sen. Ted Stevens, a key player in the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. She has advanced policy initiatives in numerous leadership roles, having directed policy efforts of a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to serving governors across the country and in previous positions for the former governors of New Mexico and Hawai’i.

Janel’s love for service started at a young age, she’s volunteered in Mother Teresa’s homes for the destitute and dying, in orphanages, churches, and schools across Asia, the South Pacific, and Russia. More recently, she assisted refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine and served as a mentor with the University of the Nations where she coached entrepreneurs starting mission-driven businesses.

She earned her masters degree from Indiana University and her bachelors degree from the University of Southern Mississippi.
