Bureau of Indian Affairs, Hopi Tribe Celebrate Opening of New Hopi Adult Correctional Center

KEAMS CANYON, Ariz. — The Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services, in partnership with the Hopi Tribe, celebrated the opening of the new Hopi Adult Correctional Center, a modern detention facility that will strengthen public safety and support the Hopi community for generations to come.

The opening ceremony featured a traditional blessing, remarks from tribal and federal leaders, special recognitions, Hopi traditional dancers, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, facility tours, and a community meal. 

The new 30,000-square-foot, 60-bed correctional center replaces the former Hopi Detention Center with a modern facility designed to enhance safety, security, and rehabilitation. The project began in 2017, when funding for the design phase was secured during the first Trump Administration. Following congressional appropriations for construction, the facility became one of the first newly constructed BIA detention centers in years to replace aging public safety infrastructure.

"This facility represents a significant investment in public safety and the future of the Hopi community," said Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Billy Kirkland. "It reflects the Trump Administration’s shared commitment with the Hopi Tribe to provide safe, secure, and modern correctional facilities that support justice, rehabilitation, and the well-being of tribal communities."

The project also includes eight government-furnished housing units for correctional staff to support recruitment and retention in this rural location. The facility is located approximately seven miles northwest of Keams Canyon, Arizona, along Highway 264.

The completion of the Hopi Adult Correctional Center marks an important milestone in Indian Affairs' ongoing efforts to modernize public safety infrastructure across Indian Country. The Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services remains committed to operating safe, secure, and humane correctional facilities in accordance with BIA detention standards while supporting tribal justice systems and community safety.
